Research the origin of the word “outfitter” and find (no surprise) that it was derived from the word “outfit”…

outfit  (n.)

1769, "act of fitting out (a ship, etc.) for an expedition," from out + fit (v.). Sense of "articles and equipment required for an expedition" first attested 1787, Amer. Eng.; the act of equipping…

Human Performance Outfitters (HPO)
, has many parallels that track closely with a rock climbing metaphor - hence the outfitter theme where articles and equipment required are related to the climb training organizations and learning professionals must endure to reach the summit

Continuous learning is so much more than training, and as the climb becomes steeper and more challenging, the plot thickens. So too does the risk of failure.

Engagement Goal with HPO

The Summit
A Sustainable,
Continuous Learning
 Environment

Failure related to not pursuing or sustaining a continuous learning environment does not equate to a downward plunge…and the ensuing bounce. Let’s face it, nobody perishes in the learning world; although, slashed budgets and reduction in force when cost centers are squeezed and trimmed give a different spin to the word “perish”.

The ultimate objective...complete the climb safely before exiting the rock.

With learning moments of need moving closer to actual work, we have no choice but to climb climb out of the traditions of training and embrace learning moments of need in the context of work.

Learning in the context of work is a significant paradigm shift

...is a very steep climb fraught with Change for the Training Organization as well as the stakeholders it serves.

This climb is nearly vertical; the route must be planned and mapped. Proper use of a complex array of specialized climbing gear and correct technique, method, movement, and often teamwork become essential skills for a safe ascent to the summit.

“Ready” to climb does equal “readiness” to climb.

The role of HPO is based upon several key elements:

*         Assessing readiness of the training organization...willingness & commitment to climb

*    Identifying skill and competency gaps in those expected to climb

*    Mapping strategy to close those gaps to ensure a successful ascent

*    Providing skills, tools, and techniques necessary to reach the summit.

Outfitters are specialized. HPO is equally specialized.

I’ve been up and down many a rock in the last thirty two years of professional training , development, and learning leadership roles. From developing technology strategy roadmaps to implementing them – from years
of traditional stand-up training to developing objectized performer support strategies – from performance consulting to managing and developing those who do – I’ve climbed my share of rocks…and I’ve bounced once or twice…but
never perished.

Use an outfitter whose specialty matches your adventure.
